Hi everyone, Daniel here.
Recently I’ve been reflecting. We’ve been building for finance teams for close to 10 years now, and thousands of them run on us. But in this AI age of 2026, one thing keeps coming back to me: better tools don’t eliminate the work. They make it slightly faster. The person still has to do it.
Over the last 10 years my conversations with CFO’s have generally been pretty consistent. They buy the tools, invest in implementation, train the team, but still, month end close often feels like a crisis.
My take is that software up until this point has always, at best, driven incremental improvement in a business process. Today’s software is built as something humans use to do things with. However, I believe the future is one where software will be designed to do things for you.
Finance has a hierarchy of needs
At Weel we believe the finance stack sits at the epicentre of every business. Every meaningful business decision - hire someone, pay a supplier, buy software, invest in a new product line, expand into a new market - eventually shows up as a finance decision. Money moving in or out. In this way, finance should inherently be one of the most strategic functions in any company.
But in most businesses, finance teams are severely under-leveraged.
Like Maslow’s, finance has its own hierarchy of needs. Operational and administrative stuff at the bottom, the connecting and reporting work in the middle, and the strategic forward-looking work at the top. Each rung depends on the one below it.
The problem is with the work and the software stack most CFOs are saddled with, most finance teams spend the majority of their time on the bottom rungs. The “busywork” - hundreds of small, repetitive tasks still need a human to move them forward. Finance ends up as the glue holding fragmented systems together.
Once you see the hierarchy, the cost is obvious. You can’t forecast on dirty data. You can’t get real-time visibility if capture is manual. You can’t be strategic if you’re spending three weeks closing the books. All the capability in the finance team is stuck being the glue at the bottom.
For years now, we’ve built Weel to help move finance teams up that hierarchy and to be the one place for how finance teams spend and manage money. The age of AI doesn’t just accelerate this mission, it actually allows us to deliver a step-change, from building a platform you do things with to building one that does things for you.
Every Expense Complete, instantly
For the last two years, one phrase has been quietly running through every product decision we’ve made at Weel. Every Expense Complete.
Every Expense Complete has two dimensions:
- All money in and out. We want to help business with every way a business spends and receives money, not just cards - AP, FX, PO, the lot.
- Depth of expense management. We want to help businesses get to the state of “completion” - the moment a payment is made, the expense is done - coded, receipt attached, approved, reconciled. No backlog. No month-end.
Only through achieving our promise of Every Expense Complete can we truly help finance teams move up the hierarchy. We don't call it Some Expenses Complete or Most Expenses Complete because until the books are closed finance can't move on, stuck on the operational and administrative work while the close drags on for weeks. The team stays trapped on the first rung.
Take month-end, it's a relic that only exists because spend wasn’t posted in real time, and weeks would pass before finance could chase down receipts. When every expense is complete the moment it happens, month-end disappears. The data is always live, and it is with this, the finance team can finally move up the hierarchy of needs.
Depth earns the right to breadth
When it comes to Every Expense, our strategy has been simple: don’t try to be everything to everyone on day one. We started with cards because cards are the messiest, highest-frequency surface in the spend stack. By nailing expense completion on one payment type, we earned the right to own more. Depth unlocks breadth. Breadth lets us automate the boring stuff across more surface area.
We’ve kept Every Expense Complete internal until now because it was more of a mantra to shape our thinking and shipping. But now, you would have noticed that we’ve been slowly revealing this since the start of 2026. We believe we can help finance teams move up the hierarchy by relentlessly working to automate the bottom rungs, the lowest order need. We wanted to reveal this now because we believe now with the help of Agents we can genuinely deliver on the promise of achieving Every Expense Complete.
What’s coming
To date we have helped thousands of Finance teams across the country reduce their month end, save hours in admin and ultimately just rid them of having to do the boring stuff. However, the next phase of Weel, where we leverage the latest tech and product thinking, I believe is the stage where we are fully able to make expense management magical. The expense platform of the future.
Not just the software that helps finance teams do the work, but software that actually does the work for them. A platform that automates expense claims entirely, approves your AP and intelligently times invoice payment dates to maximise cashflow, books the most cost-effective flight within policy, negotiates with your suppliers, and optimises your FX exposure amongst other exciting things.
This future vision is no longer aspirational but possible with the introduction of our AI agents - Something I will share more on shortly.
Nine years in
When we started, we weren’t building for finance teams. The pivot to business came when the demand did. Every iteration since has been chasing the same thing: finance that just works. Expenses that don’t pile up. A month-end close that isn’t a crisis. The abolishment of busywork or as i like to say, “the boring stuff”.
Every Expense Complete is the simplest way I’ve found to describe what we’ve always been building toward. It’s not a new direction its the direction!
More soon.
