Weelhouse Wire

Your monthly roundup from Weel HQ

Abstract illustration of two hands holding credit cards

If it feels like Australian businesses have hit a new step-change in AI adoption lately, you're not imagining it.

This quarter, our Q1 AI Spending Index found that total spend on Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI - based on real business spending data. We paired the AI Spend Index with the 2026 CFO Report, an independent YouGov survey of 270 ANZ finance leaders, to understand AI adoption; 87% of CFOs are either actively scaling or piloting AI, but only 35% can measure ROI.

Let's get into it.

Inside this edition:

  • Media Watch: Rate hikes, AML/CTF deadlines, the AI adoption divide, and an accountant shortage with no easy fix
  • Weel AI Spending Index: Australian SMB AI adoption hit 27.5% in March - and AI is now replacing software budgets, not sitting on top of them
  • The 2026 ANZ CFO Report: What 200+ ANZ finance leaders told us about the gap between AI activity and ROI - plus the webinar recording
  • Enterprise-grade security, verified: Weel is now SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified
  • Product updates: the all-new personalised dashboard is now live, MYOB AccountRight open beta, and more features to supercharge your month-end
  • Weel on the ground: Brisbane 12 May and Sydney 13 May - come find us!

Weel media watch: What we’re reading right now

Layered illustration of man reading on laptop

These stories sparked conversation at Weel HQ, so we’re passing them on to you.

Operating environment and strategy

  • The RBA's third consecutive hike takes the cash rate to 4.10%, with the 5 May decision riding on Q1 CPI data due 30 April - the window to reprice borrowing assumptions is now, not after the announcement. (RBA)
  • The RBNZ held at 2.25% in April but flagged a potential hike before mid-year - NZ finance teams that modelled continued cuts need a Plan B before the next meeting. (RBNZ)
  • Deloitte Access Economics describes Australia as "running on empty" on productivity, with rate rises, US tariff uncertainty, and softening demand all stacking at once. If FY26 plans haven't been stress-tested, April is the time. (Deloitte Access Economics)

Regulation and compliance

  • AUSTRAC's expanded AML/CTF rules took effect 31 March - 90,000 new entities can now enrol, and 30 May is the hard deadline for compliance officer notifications. If that appointment hasn't been made, it's already overdue. (AUSTRAC)
  • The ATO has made General Interest Charges and Shortfall Interest Charges non-deductible - businesses carrying ATO debt can no longer offset the cost, making prompt payment materially cheaper than it was 12 months ago. (ATO)
  • From 1 July, tax agents and accountants advising on tax liabilities become regulated AML/CTF entities - identity verification, AML programs, and independent review cycles all apply. (Cleardocs)

AI and automation becoming embedded, not experimental

  • CSIRO data shows Australian firms that adopted AI posted 36% more non-AI job ads than non-adopting peers - AI isn't replacing teams, it's creating demand for people who can work alongside it. (CSIRO)
  • 16.2% of Australian finance job ads now mention AI skills, up from 3.3% a year ago - the market has repriced AI literacy from optional to table stakes. (Indeed Hiring Lab)
  • Only 54% of senior finance professionals feel equipped to use AI effectively, and acquiring AI-literate talent is now CFOs' top near-term challenge according to Gartner - the bottleneck isn't the tools, it's the people. (Gartner)

Workforce, capability and the talent gap

  • Australia's accountant shortfall has passed 10,000, with CA ANZ reporting sub-50% fill rates for auditors and Professional Year enrolments falling from 7,122 in 2018 to just 340 in 2024. The graduate pipeline isn't going to close this gap. (CA ANZ)

AI Spending Index Q1/26: Anthropic dethrones OpenAI

Layered illustration of invoice details sent for approval

Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI as Australia's leading business AI platform by dollars spent. Here's what the transaction data shows:

  • 27.5% of Australian SMBs pay for AI, up from 22.1% in January - the fastest two-month acceleration on record
  • Anthropic nearly doubled in two months - 5.4% of companies to 10.2%. OpenAI flat at 19.6%
  • Companies on Anthropic are spending 3x more - $873/month vs $286 for OpenAI
  • New to index - top-20 SaaS platform spend has dropped from 46% to 42.7%

2026 ANZ CFO Report: What 200+ CFOs are doing with AI now

Layered illustration of invoice details sent for approval

270 ANZ finance leaders told us where they're at with AI. The adoption numbers are up. The proof isn't keeping pace.

  • 87% are now scaling or actively piloting AI, up from 15% in 2025
  • Only 35% of CFOs can point to measurable returns
  • Leading AI adoption and communicating insights to the board are the two most in-demand capabilities, according to CFOs
  • Three priorities for closing the proof gap: measure before buying more tools, fix data foundations before scaling, and build the skill of translating AI output into board-ready decisions
