August 2026

Weelhouse
Wire

Your monthly roundup from Weel HQ

A hand holding teal and lime Weel cards

Welcome to the August edition of the Weelhouse Wire.

August has been a big month here. One thing we’ve been saying a lot lately is Every Expense Complete, and that’s the theme of this edition.

From this month’s headlines, to a wave of new product releases, to the Sydney CFO Symposium, to a roundtable, to a Xero Awards nod, to the buses currently doing laps of Sydney with our name on the side, it all comes back to the same three words. (We’re getting a little out of breath just listing it all.)

Let’s get into it.

Inside this edition:

✦ Media Watch: Ten real stories worth your time, from a smelter’s collapse to a record-breaking week on the ASX
✦ Every Expense Complete: behind every product decision we make
✦ Product updates: new releases moving Every Expense Complete forward
✦ Weel on the ground: Sydney CFO Symposium and the Weel Finance Leaders Roundtable, in review
✦ We’re a finalist: Xero Global App Awards 2026, one of four worldwide for Innovation App of the Year, plus a second nomination for NZ
✦ The Weels on the bus: our first ever out-of-home campaign, doing laps around Sydney CBD

Weel Media Watch: what we’re reading right now

An illustration of a finance professional next to a chart, representing Weel Media Watch

We read a lot so you don’t have to. Here’s what’s actually worth your time.

Insolvencies and restructurings

✦ ACFS Port Logistics, Australia’s largest privately owned container logistics operator, collapsed into administration on 7 August owing the ATO an amount reports have put at around $60 million, days after saying it had finalised arrangements to repay the debt in full. (Insolvency Insider AU)
✦ Liberty Bell Bay, Australia’s only manganese alloy smelter, entered liquidation on 3 August after a rescue sale fell through, owing creditors somewhere between $70 million and $300 million and costing roughly 200 jobs. (ABC News)
✦ Proud Poppy Clothing, the Victoria/Queensland fashion chain, went into voluntary administration on 5 August, closing three regional stores. (SmartCompany)

Fraud and enforcement

✦ Fiducian Investment Management Services was ordered to pay a $7.3 million penalty on 11 August after the NSW Supreme Court found it made misleading “ethical” claims about a fund that held fossil-fuel investments. (ASIC)

Governance and trust

✦ KPMG Australia’s leadership faced a parliamentary grilling on 14 August, with the firm’s new chair telling senators he was left “shaken” after meeting the whistleblower at the centre of its audit scandal. (ABC News)
✦ A Four Corners investigation found more than 4,800 older Australians died waiting on aged-care funding approval in 2024–25, and that the real waitlist is closer to 154,000 than the 100,000 officially reported. (Four Corners, ABC News)
✦ ASIC is now running at least 12 cases against 20 defendants over the Shield/First Guardian super collapse, with Macquarie and Netwealth already paying out $400M+ combined. (ASIC 25-307MR)
✦ ASIC just sued auditor Auditeo over its own audit work on the First Guardian collapse. (ASIC 26-175MR)

Banking and payments

✦ The RBA’s review of payments system regulation closed submissions on 7 August, with mobile wallets and BNPL among the areas it’s weighing up for potential future rules (RBA media release), right as Mastercard closed its roughly $1.8 billion acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK (Mastercard newsroom).

Some good news

✦ The ASX 200 notched back-to-back record closes on 5 and 6 August, finishing at 9,271 points as mining and gold stocks rallied on stronger commodity prices. (ABC News)

Every Expense Complete: behind every product decision we make

Every Expense Complete

Three words. Simple to say, harder to earn.

Picture day thirty, books closing: you’re still chasing a $42 taxi receipt from three weeks ago, an approval’s stuck in someone’s inbox, and receipts only get checked against policy once they’ve already landed. That’s not the exception. That’s most month-ends, for most finance teams.

These three words have quietly guided every product decision we’ve made for the past two years, built on nine years spent working with real finance teams to learn what “complete” actually needed to mean. From now, they sit under our logo too.

“It’s not a new direction. It’s the direction.”

Daniel Kniaz, CEO and Founder, Weel

See it for yourself: watch how Every Expense Complete plays out in Weel today, then send it to the person on your team, or at another business, who’s still doing it the hard way. Want to know where we’re taking it next? Our next chapter lays out what we’re building.

Weel on the ground: Sydney CFO Symposium and the Weel Finance Leaders Roundtable

Damon Hauenstein presenting at the Sydney CFO Symposium

150+ CFOs, one keynote, and a smaller room the next day

Finance leaders packed CFO Magazine’s Sydney CFO Symposium at ICC Sydney on Tuesday, where our CFO and COO Damon Hauenstein took the stage for his keynote on Future of Finance: Where AI Is Just a Way of Life. Off stage, the real value was in the conversations, our team spent the day talking through month-end pain with the people who live it, and a few of those are already turning into next steps.

“It’s the greatest time to be a CFO.”

Damon Hauenstein, CFO and COO, Weel

The next day, a smaller room: we hosted our inaugural Weel Finance Leaders Roundtable at Rockpool Sydney, with finance leaders from El Jannah, TPG Telecom, Wesley Mission, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and more, for a candid conversation on digital transformation and where AI actually fits into finance teams’ day-to-day.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hi at the Sydney CFO Symposium, and everyone who joined us at the Weel Finance Leaders Roundtable.

We’re a finalist: Xero Global App Awards 2026

Xero Global App Awards 2026

Weel has been named a finalist for Innovation App of the Year at the Xero Global App Awards 2026, one of just four apps worldwide shortlisted in a category built specifically for apps pushing the boundaries of AI. We picked up a second nomination too: Small Business App of the Year for New Zealand.

The Weels on the bus

The Weels on the Bus

Our first ever out-of-home campaign is officially on the road. Bus ads carrying the Every Expense Complete message are doing laps around Sydney CBD until 6 September, and a lot of late nights went into getting them there. We wanted a reminder out in the world that even in the middle of month-end and year-end, it doesn’t have to be chaotic. So if you’ve spotted one stuck in traffic, outside your office, or nearly missed your stop staring at it, we’re a little chuffed (and a little relieved).

Keep an eye out, it’s probably closer than you think. Spot one? Snap a photo and tag us, we’d love to see it.

One more thing

We’re building Weelhouse Wire for finance teams who want an edge. What should we keep? What should we drop? What do you want to see in next month’s newsletter?

Reply directly to this email and let us know your feedback. We read every email.
